Congrove or Congreve Family in UK and USA
Date: 06 December, 2000
From: Kenneth Congrove, Sacramento, USA
E-mail: kwcongrove@aol.comI am tracing my family roots to UK. The earliest Congrove/Congreve/Congrieve I have found is Archibald Smith Congrove and Moses Congrove/Congreve. Archibald Smith Congrove was born abt.1717 in Prince George County, Maryland Colony. Moses is born aby.1717 he was living 50 miles west of Archibald in Prince William County, Virginia Colony. There is a Lt. William Congrieve that emmigrated from Ireland for the American Colonies from Ireland. I have found no other records of this William Congrieve. I have four generations of William Congreves in my family tree. Can anyone help with this family links? Maybe you have some long lost relatives that emmigrated about this time. Will share any of my information on UK as well.

From: Kenneth W. Congrove, Jr., Vancouver, USA
E-mail: kwcongrove@aol.com
I am researching a person that was named Thomas (surname) taken from a Danish-Saxon village of Sandford, in Shropshire, north of Shrewsbury. He was a general or a hero at the Battle of Hastings. The surnames used by several branches of the family later was Sanford-modern form, De Saunford, De Sandford, Samford, Samforth, ect. If you are researching this extinct peerage I would love your help. Heraldry show these families all bearing similar crests.

Harriet Ellen Spice....looking for current family members
Date: 14 November, 2000
From: Tracy Thompson, Toronto Ontario, Canada
E-mail: militarywife02@hotmail.comHello, I am researching my family tree and need some help with my great grandmother's family.
I know that Harriet Ellen Spice was born on June 24, 1894 at 2 Wellington Cottage, All Saints County of Hastings to John Thomas Spice and Ellen Anne Richardson.
Harriet married William George Stanley Egerton on February 6, 1918 in the Parish Church Hastings. They had one child, Sadie Ellen Egerton on Aug. 22, 1918 born in Hastings (Sadie married in Canada to Eric Robert Eugene Bevington).
William was in the military and after being injuried the family followed him to Canada in the fall of 1919.
The family settled in Toronto Ontario Canada.
Any family connections would be great, I know that Harriet was the oldest of at least 12 children and I would love to get to know more about the current family.
Thanks Tracy

If somebody happens to know pebble artists who worked by the Hastings Pier and on the beach in Marina, St Leonards, in summer, please, send them best regards from Yuliya from Russia.

Hello form Australia
Date: 05 October, 2000
From: mary dennett, Shepparton, Australia
E-mail: mdennett@mercy.org.auHi I'm wondering if there are any Dennett families in
Hastings or in the East Sussex area. In searching the family we found that the first Dennett in our family to come to Australia, William, came in 1800 -yes! as a convict! He was charged and convicted with highway robbery in Sedlescombe in 1797. He was subsequently given a pardon and established himself as a hotel keeper in Hobart. His sons came to Victoria at the time of the gold rushes in the mid 1800's and settled in Beechworth Victoria. WE have quite a deal of information from records in the Church in Hastings dating back to 1700's. Just interested to know if any family descendants are still living in the area. I'd love to hear from you.

Ex-pupil looking for contact
Date: 18 August, 2000
From: Alan Alvarez, Lancaster, lancs
E-mail: whentiss@hotmail.comI'm called Alan and I'm looking to find some people from when I went to school or for that matter from when I was in the scouts and Venture scouts. I lived in Hastings (St.George St. I think) for a couple of years and 4 years in St Leonards -on-sea (Albert St.). I attended Grove Comprehensive ( I don't know if Comprehensives exist anymore - oh my poor history disappering before my very eyes!) from the 3rd to the 6th form 1983-86 in class 3w, 4w and surprisingly 5w.
I broke my wrist in a bicycle accident in 1984, a month after I'd won £300 on the pools (equality I guess).
Someone I'd particulary like to contact again is Sarah Johnston (Johnson?) who had a friend called Sarah Field and who I last saw working in Debenhams shoe department but if anyone else remembers me in a positive way and would like to reminisece embarrisingly about the past is free to contact my email. Class reunion anyone?

'Josie' Magazine
Date: 10 August, 2000
From: Josie Lawson, St Leonards on Sea, England, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.comI run a non-profit magazine called 'Josie' based in Hastings, England. It is not on the Internet except I put details of it on the 1066 Message Board, Hastings, England. I am always looking for donations to help the expense of continuing it and I know others enjoy reading it. I wonder if you would send me write-ups at no cost to me to benefit people who read it once a month. It would also benefit you, as you would be advertised in the magazine.
People like Pam Ayres (Poet), Richard Branson, Rio the gladiator, know of this magazine and wish it well. I created it last May 99 -
I am registered partially sighted (about to have yet another eye operation in my good eye so we'll see) but I wish to continue with this so may even need support in computer equipment - I believe in not giving up. I am registered hearing impaired due to menieres disease, and I am registered disabled. I have hypertension, osteo-arthritis and I think I may have M.E but nothing confirmed. Oh yes, I suffer carpal tunnel syndrome. The eye problems are glaucoma, cataracts, and mac.deg. (Dry) right eye. At present the consultant can't see behind the left eye, feels it could be haemorrhaging, and I am being referred for cataract removal and implant.
I am always honest - so if you all out there wish to help me advance my occupational therapy that I love, because I am also a poet and correspondent I would genuinely be pleased.
Copy Paper, Printing Ink, anything in kind for such purpose would also be gratefully received. I am in desperate need of a long arm stapler and a photocopier would help me get more distributed.
Look forward to hearing from you. -

Are there any dog friendly beaches ?
Date: 08 August, 2000
From: Frank Mitchell, Wakefield, West Yorks
E-mail: Frankmitch@aol.comI have tried ,unsuccessfully so far to find out where in East Sussex, I can find a beach or beaches where I can take my dog.
Hastings tourist Information gave little help ,giving me a map with NO DOGS plastered over it. There was also a list of councils to ring . Ringing Rother council produced a similar puzzled reply and more telephone numbers to ring.
It's quite a simple question -there has to be somebody in East Sussex who owns a dog and can answer this question .
So are there any dog friendly beaches in the area or aren't there ? If so where ?
Thank you for any positive help - hopefully before my holiday on Saturday 12th August.

From: Josie Lawson, St Leonards on Sea, England
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.comHASTINGS SHOPMOBILITY
Will you support Hastings Shopmobility?
Give them some cash to help others in need
They hire out scooters and wheelchairs
So the disabled can have independence
In our town of Hastings.
It is a charity and they need help
Otherwise they are threatened with closure
I know some may think it is a charity not needed
But, have you thought what you would do Ü
In the same situation as the disabled
Who use Hastings Shopmobility in Hastings Town?
Come on, get your wallets out, get your purses outƒ.
Especially Hastings Council Ü Hastings MPÍs and
The Mayor of Hastings Townƒ.
We all do our bit to help this town
Including myself who is sometimes overlooked

These are the two first questions I had to ask. I would be pleased if you could answer, it will help me very much

From: David Griffin, Tacoma, WA, USA
E-mail: dgwlr@aol.comDoes anyone have any geneological information about my family who lived in St.Leonards-on-Sea. My father, JOHN CALTON GRIFFIN, his sisters, LILLIAN and GLADYS (married Canadian, FRANK SHULER). My Grandfather JOHN ALBERT GRIFFIN was driver of Schools Class locomotive (I believe, Wellington 902. I never knew my Grandmother, ELIZABETH (I believe, nee PEARSON).
My father cannot now fill me in on much of the family history and most of my relatives are now either deceased or long out of touch.
I now live too far away to do any family detective work myself, except by internet. Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you.

West St. Leonards School, Battle & Langton School in the Forties and 1950
Date: 02 July, 2000
From: Janet Morris, North Vancouver,, Canada
E-mail: janmor@home.comI attended those schools in the Forties before our family immigrated to Canada in 1948. I remember a few names and would very much like to track them down. We returned from Canada for a few months in 1949/50 and during that period I attended (for the second time) Battle School. I was friendly with EDNA COLLINS, KATHLEEN BOWERS, PAMELA GOLDER, ANN FREEMAN. Anyone know where they are now? I started school there in 1942 and remember DOREEN KEELEY and my first crush, DEREK TESTER. For a year or so before we emigrated I attended West St. Leonards School and my best friend was PAULINE COLLINS who lived across the road from the school. BRENDA NEWTON was another close friend and she lived on Western Road in St. Leonards. It's a slim hope but I would appreciate any news of those friends from so many years ago.

E-mail: sfm42@cswebmail.comHi Hastings!
This is a great site. I'm interested in history and found all the information and links I needed here about the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings. It's interesting too to see what the area is now like a millenium after the battle.
There are now lots of other web sites with Hastings resources and links but without doubt this one is the most consistently useful.
Keep up the good work

I`m looking to find any old mates who remember me from silverdale, william parker or Hastings College of Arts of technology.
If you knew me, I`m sure you remember me :) I was a scruffy looking kid with thick NHS glasses (things only improved after I got married, and only just a little ;) I was well into computers at Silverdale, using the BBC (model A I think it was) and my Zx Spectrum at home (ahh those rubber keys), and have amongst other things, been to uni, worked for several isp's and am now starting on another job.
I would like to hear form anyone that knew me, just to joke about old times maybe, and you can see me at http://www.kstv.co.uk/politic1.htm with my son Paul, to see that I`m little tidyier than I was as a kid :)
People I would really to make contact with, or if you know the email addresses of these people, it would be appreciated.

Breeds Place
Date: 22 April, 2000
From: Mick Breeds, Chatham, UK
E-mail: Mick@breeds.orgI am researching my family history and know that back in the 1800's Breeds were a very large family in Hastings.
There is a short section of shops on the front named "Breeds Place" near Pelham Place, this got it's name from an Architect that built a row of Houses beneath the Cliff behind these shops, he named them after his Wife Martha Breeds.
I researched this and other information whilst in Hastings last year but have since lost it. It was from a book written by a local historian, if anyone can tell me the historians name or the name of the book I would be very grateful.
Many Thanks.

Post Offices
Date: 28 February, 2000
From: Vicki Masters, Cardiff, Wales
E-mail: vickimasters@hotmail.comHello. This is rather an unusual request but I need your help.
My parents desperately want to escape their dull and dreary lives in Birmingham and pursue
their dream of running a Post Office in the countryside. However, it is something that they know little about.
I would be grateful if anyone who does or ever has run a Post Office could contact me with any advice and
information so that I may pass it on to my parents, perhaps even exchange e-mail addresses so that they may
contact you for themselves. Also any information on Post Offices currently up for leasehold in your area would
be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail any info and advice you have to vickimasters@hotmail.com.
Thank you.
