'Josie's Ebb & Flow Magazine' (non-profit)
Date: 17 December, 2001
From: Josie Lawson (Editor), St Leonards on Sea, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.comHappy Christmas again everyone...as you see further down, I, as Editor am having a rest, but I have been happy to complete a Christmas Issue of the magazine. Quite a few in my home town have shown preference for it to continue, so maybe there will be others.
Anyway, here is the contact address if any of you out there would like a copy or a years worth, for yourselves or as a gift. 1 per copy to your door in the UK - or 6 per year for either 3 to 6 depending on my health, but with your understanding that I do this voluntary, and the funds are to cover the expenses...
Why not join in the fun - I do have something up my sleeve quite different, but to find out, you will have to start reading it now and in the future. Take care everyone...let the post box start filling up...contact address: PO Box 117, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex. TN38 9ZJ - United Kingdom

Josie's Ebb & Flow Magazine (non-profit)
Date: 04 December, 2001
From: Josie Lawson (Editor), Hastings, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.comFurther to information written on Ebb & Flow, I write this. Im taking time out from the work front of the magazine, giving the health of my body some security. I need the energy to discuss my life with my person, sort, re-organize give time to my family.
I have come to the conclusion that as I have let people know Im ceasing but have given them reason to contact, if they feel the magazine should continue; I wish it to continue, in its own sweet happy way it did so! I never was going to cease it, but problems of health, seemed to effect it!
I said I would never give it up, I wont but, although Im an Editor, I am the instigator of the magazine. I am also just me and like everyone in the world including, the Prime Minister, need time out to re-charge my batteries.
I once felt an apathetic robot, in days, and years gone by, but with enthusiasm and adversity,
My mind moved through archives of intensity.
If I spoke to you from just my mind, the brain of my physical body, I would say Happy Christmas, have a great time, give me time to heal what is effecting my person I will then be on the road to recovery.
The town never plagued me or pressured me there were many who supported the magazine in the making and so the continuance of it will continue in my own speed. Maybe four a year, two a year, one a year at my own speed
In my time out moments, I will be doing as before behind the scenes, but at a slower pace, doing my correspondence for The Argus, My Poetry the poet in me that started all this enjoying my music taking an interest in everything that became like a fast train on a rail track.
It is known that I am a disabled person Osteo-arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, glaucoma, menieres disease to name but a few, while the research, and tests for the other problems are being carried out so, Im sure you can see - it is time I took a rest.
Its Christmas after all maybe a month at least out, will give your Editor time time to give her eyes the joy of colour words the joy of the fiction world of the other authors the sound if she can find a way through the tunnel of tinnitus and become able to not be focused as someone strange but interesting.
Yes, I laugh it off but I am a human being I am not focusing just on self as some think but I will for the moment why shouldnt I? Others do that for themselves, so why shouldnt I? A speck in just the role of society, an Editor of own making reality, in the past Should she become part of society again, or rest in just her own happiness? Your Choice. Give a sign, keep the words flowing the contributions that could help others Your Choice. Let us all just help the world to Peace again?
Whats that in the sky over yonder?
Your choice, your wonder!

'Ebb & Flow' (formerly 'Josie Magazine' non-profit making
Date: 02 December, 2001
From: Josie Lawson (Editor), St Leonards on Sea, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.comDear Readers
I am with regret informing you of the magazine ceasing due to the necessity of my health needing to take priority.
If at anytime I can start this magazine up again, then I will.
For anyone who would really like this to happen, then perhaps they could write to 'Ebb & Flow', P O Box 117, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex. TN38 9ZJ - UK and I will then keep it in mind.
My creativity will continue, but at a slower pace.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.
I am truly sorry, but the pace is just a little bit too much for me as I still do the correspondence for 'The Argus' newspaper. Although I have had many readers interested in keeping it going, many were only word of mouth and the growth was becoming slower...
I would further like to take this opportunity and thank all the contributors for contributing their work and any such person that has donated their time, energy or expertise.

E-mail: frankgutsell.home@cableinet.co.ukI found Derek on this site after not having contact for over fourty five years, we attended Priory Road School together in the late forties we remained friends until I moved to Bristol. Derek was already in touch with another old friend from school
Mick Fermor, we all got together with our wives in Hastings in November 2000. Unfortunately our visit to Derek and Mary Anne in their home in Mission Viejo California was on September 11th, we were nearly four hours into our journey when the plane was turned back to Heathrow because to the terrible events in America. Hopefully it won't be too long before we try again. Are there any more old friends out there? Get in touch.

How yuall doing in Hastings
Date: 21 July, 2001
From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, USA
E-mail: djmawhite@att.netBeen a long time since I checked in. How are thingds in Hastings these days? I see by the Observer on line that the by-pass road was shot down. Whats the scoop on that? I would have thought that would have been a good thing. Whats happening to the White Rock, is it closing down?
Is the pier doing OK? Havn't heard too much about it lately. Dave, any solutions been reach on the traffic congestion? Gosh I'm full of questions this time, but I like to keep up on events in the town.
Things are going good over here. I'm expecting visitors from England in September. Onother Hastingsite who now lives in Bristol. His name is Frank Gutsell, anyone remember him.
TTFN.

E-mail: roksta@tm.net.myI attended Hastings College of Further Eucation between 1976 to 1978 for my A levels. We were a group of young Malaysian students, barely 17 year olds, sent by the government to pursue various university degrees in the UK. We stayed in St.Leonard-on-sea and some of us rented a bungalow at 13, Boscobel road, near the college(I wonder whether the house still stands?). My two years there was enjoyable and I did make a lot of friends. Sadly we have lost contact over the years. All of us now are middle aged and succesful in our own right.I will be making a trip to St.Leonard-on-sea this early julai and hopefully rekindled the happy times there. See you all soon.

Jenny Lind
Date: 06 June, 2001
From: Alan Butler, Toronto, Canada
E-mail: alan.butler@sympatico.caInteresting - I was doing a tour of one of Toronto's older buildings and the guide was showing us a theatre salon where Jenny Lind apparently performed several times in the late 1800's, to rave reviews. There was (is?) a pub in High Street called The Jenny Lind I think. If I searched hard enough through this site I would probably find a reference, but can anyone confirm the connection ?
By the way, Derek White, my brother Ray who you knew at school, worked at the hardware store all his life but unfortunately died of heart failure in 1995. His two sons and one daughter preferred other careers, so Len Butlers Emporium ceased business shortly after Ray's death. Butlers Emporium just along the street still exists of course.

Its a problem alright
Date: 04 June, 2001
From: dave, ., .
E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.netyou need to get people out of there cars and onto mass transit,i know of light rail transit systems that work really well they get alot of cars off the roads, but people say that they loose some of there freedom by not being able to go where they want when they want, never before have we all had so many choises in life, but people seem happy to chose to sit in traffic all day,not my idea of fun , not to mention the environmental cost of all that idleing traffic, really bad for the cars to,towns like bexhill and hastings dont need a large scale rail network that is there at the moment, just visit bexhill station and you will see what i mean, not to many people use it now, its cheaper to drive, heres an example it is cheaper for me to drive to london in an old landrover 1972,than to go by train, they put the prices up and more people drive,as long as they maintain there proffit margins for the shareholders , then sod the commuters, up goes the prices, more people would use it if the price was much less, better for all concerned, british rail never made a proffit for as long as i can remember, and now its all owned but private companys, who certainly know how to charge, the eastbourne to hastings line is running at a loss and has done for years, so tarmac the lot and run busses, they have to run very regularly, and on time.people will use them if the service is right and the cost is right, the cost savings to the local councils by removing cars from the roads will be great, one car accident costs a fortune , in time and services, roads cost unbelivable amounts, and chew up even more countryside,so the councils would be wise to look at mass transit systems now rather than having to do it in the future, they will have to do it , its only a question of time.
Interesting problem Dave
Date: 03 June, 2001
From: derek white, Mission Viejo, California, USA
E-mail: djmawhite@aol.comDave I was interested in your last message on traffic problems in and around Hastings. We live in different parts of the world but we seem to have the same problems.
Due to the constanat builbing of houses our roads became congested. What took fifteen miutes to drive now took fourty five.
Solution! add more lane to the freeways and redesign the on and off ramps.
This didn't work too well so they added carpool lanes, two or more persons in a car. This didn't work so they decided to build toll roads, unheard of in California but they did it any way. Some of these are now going broke because they did not attract the uses that was forcast. The building of toll roads etc only encouraged more building. Right now eight thousand new homes are being built just five miles from where I live and a further two thousand are being built twenty miles south of me. They just can't seem to find the answer. If you can solve it over there you can come over here and make a fortune.
Good luck.
hastings bypass
Date: 03 June, 2001
From: dave, ., .
E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.netwell there is much going on with the hastings bexhill bypass,I can remember in the 1970 s there was talk of the bexhill northern aproach road and the hastings bypass, neither of which came about, there are just to many cars etc,our infrastructure has been created in such a way that we now need a car, or very reliable public transport.neither of which seem to offer a good soloution, the more roads you build the more trafic will use them, but the amount of traffic will continue to grow, no matter what, so there comes a time when the existing road network cant cope to well, that happened in our area some 10 years ago, people need to end this loveafair with the car, and think do i rearly need to drivr half a mile to the shop to get the paper or whould it be better to walk. The traffic on delawarr road at glyne gap is crazy at the best times of day let alone rush hour,I put a suggestion forward many years ago, to rip up the rail line between eastbourne and hastings, and tarmac it . to run busses only , that way they can travel from town to town very easily, there could be many more stops, and at the end they could just drive into the various towns etc, that would get them off the main roads, and make for a more convient way to get about, they also have to have the cost, very low or free, to encourage people to use it,the system would work, but i hear all the buisiness people saying , how can it make a profit?, there in lies the problem, the high price of road building will always find funding, local free transit wont, which is cheaper?.mass transit will return, its only a question of time , so we need to be leaders in this field and get it built.busses only routes, and carpooling are good soloutions to the problem, so lets get it done,Is it possible to take your neighbour to work etc, do you need 3 cars etc, these questions are becomming more relavent nowadays, so the soloution starts will all of us,ask what can i do?. not why dont THEY DO SOMETHING.

The Pier
Date: 06 May, 2001
From: violet, Hastings, Sussex
E-mail: violet@hotmail.comLocal chat is that many people were disappointed with the pier. They possibly misunderstood that May 5th was more in the nature of a preview than its real opening, which is sheduled for August. It seems its owners were damned if they did and damned if they didn't get those gates open. The mood on the pier's first day seemed to be one of slight panic, almost as if the owners had hoped it would be 'alright on the night' In spite of the expensive commodities on view there was a feeling that the whole thing had been just flung together in a hotch-potch, gypsy display of wealth. (and why did the bar and security staff look so miserable)? The short delay until the end-of-May Bank Holiday for the preview days might have helped, I think. Yet it seems ungrateful to look this particular gift horse in the mouth, at least the pier has been saved and we must hope that the general atmosphere improves with time.

From: derek white, Mission Viejo, California, USA
E-mail: djmawhite@aol.comThanks for your input Rob. The only way to get change is to keep the pressure on. Not being in the UK there is not much I can do except keep up with developements. It is up to the residence to change things by either running for council (preferably young blood), or voting. If those that turn out to vote is anything like most places including Mission Viejo it will be a hard road to haul.
Good luck and I look forward to your comments.

Accountability
Date: 17 April, 2001
From: Rob Dyer, Tunbridge Wells, England
E-mail: rob_dyer@hotmail.comI agree with Steve that Hastings is a great place in parts to visit, however despite the crime (which is on the increase everywhere) there have been many mistakes made by the council which have done nothing to improve the town. I moved to T Wells last year after living most of my 34 years in Hastings, and I have steadily become appalled by the gross ignorance displayed by the local council. The trouble is no-one is accountable for their actions. Roger Carrier, the person most responsible for pushing through the monstrous shopping centre on the cricket pitch, was hailed by the Observer as being a hero (front page headlines!). He shortly after resigned his position, but where are the headlines now that we have empty shops a couple of years later, and some units STILL not filled? Not such a good idea now eh? To add insult to injury the council have now introduced a parking scheme which drives people away from the centre. I have too much to comment on in one message anyway. I'd like to see some accountability, and clear the stale council members (some of whom have been around for well over 15 years) and get get some new blood in who take their job seriously and not just as a hobby. Hastings is still my home town and I do stick up for it, but there is much still to do to return it to it's former state.

Hi to anyone who might remember me
Date: 05 April, 2001
From: Steve Collins, Norwich, Norfolk
E-mail: michelle@steve117.fsnet.co.ukI went to Silverdale County Primary School and then on to Hastings Grammar School. That must have been circa 1969-1971. I recall a few names but as I am fast approaching the tender age of 40, I guess the memory is fading a bit. Ian Nunn, Nick Cooper, Linda Whittaker and Laura Blake are the ones that spring to mind.I I used to live on Ghylside Avenue (115) and also recall a Tony and Richard (i think) Barber. Ian and Andy Gillespie were sons of one of my Dads work colleagues. If this rings any bells then please feel free to send an e.

From: dave, ., .
E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.netthanks for the web sites i will check them out, as you say eastbourne etc do have there problems, even sleepy bexhill has more that its fair share of problems, and in most cases its just a few that spoil it for the rest, however i used to live in battle ,and if you caused trouble ,or did some of the things that the youth of today get up to , you didnt answer to the police, there were a couple of familys in the town who sort of looked after the locals, and god help you if you mugged an old lady etc, needless to say there wasnt that much trouble, and when there was it was usualy ousiders, and it was delt with very quickly, i dont agree with vigulantes etc , but you knew that if you caused trouble then watch out, there was a good comunity spirit, and everyone knew there neighbours, and watched out for each other, today people turn the other way and say , glad thats not me,if the criminals knew that it wasnt aceptable then there would be a lot less crime. People shape there own environment and if they want things to change then, keep your eyes out for your neighbours, take an intrest in the goings on in the towns, and get rid of these waste of space criminals, it takes only a small effort on everyones part to make a big difference.
Get A Balanced View of Hastings' Problems
Date: 05 April, 2001
From: violet, Hastings, United Kingdom
E-mail: violetburkin@hotmail.comTo ex-Hastonian Derek White, now of California, I would suggest he could get a more balanced view of events in Hastings if he read the daily East Sussex news on www.thisiseastbourne.co.uk and www.thisisbrighton.co.uk These are the websites of the county publication The Evening Argus. He will learn from these sites that crime is not exclusive to Hastings. Even once-sedate Eastbourne and Worthing have a very bad record for crimes of street violence and robbery.

From: dave, ., .
E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.net.Thanks for the input there mr powell ,much apreciated, its good to here as many sides of a debate as possible,as you say metro toronto dose have its problems as with any major city,as for gun toting cops, well belive me if you had to face these crooks on the streets you to would want to be armed and protected, I have worked in this field in the past and the last thing a good cop wants to do is draw his side arm,but sadly the crooks dont give a dam about human life, and will shoot you in the blink of an eye, there are some heavily armed police in the senlac force, and i know from my associates that the thing that they dread the most is shooting an inocent person, but if you are faced with a replica gun,or a gun threat then you have only a small window of oppertunity to react, and if you dont then you are dead,so untill the crooks stop using weapons then dont expect the police to disarm.the press do indeed have a habit of overstating the bad news becaues as anyone in the press will tell you good news isnt news, this reflects on us as a society, that is why i belive in comunity spirit, and team work , people can improve there environment just by standing up and saying enough is enough, sadly people dont like doing that, they will all complain but then do nothing.so if you want change then make it happen, people know who the petty crooks are,so let the boys in blue know.its only a small group that give hastings a bad name,so help get them off the streets,it only takes one rotten apple to spoil the barrel.
Crime Reports
Date: 01 April, 2001
From: Bob Powell, London, Canada
E-mail: bpowell@sympatico.caInteresting banter about the Observer's reporting of local crime: It's the same everywhere really isn't it? At least in countries affected by the baby boom - England, Canada and the USA. Here in Canada the press constantly report criminal activity as if the world is falling apart - but read between the lines.
Actually the government's statistics for criminal activity show a very different picture: Most violent crimes are committed by people between the ages of 18 and 30 - remember that aging population? We're all to old for that kind of thing anymore. Further in our City the Police report that violent crime (which was redifined to include poeple yelling obscenities) has decreased by 40% in the last couple of years. You'd never believe it if you read the newspapers.
Did you know that a study using the MMPI (the World's most widely recognized personality test) determined that Police officers and hardened criminals have very similar personality types? Yes! And today our local police force is arming itself with high powered weapons - semi automatics (as standard side arms) helicopters and armour piercing bullets. Doesn't that make you feel warm and mushy inside? The press is covering crime that is decreasing as if it is on the increase, people with criminal - sometimes psychotic - personality types are being given legal sanction to shoot people (most of the people shot in Canada are shot by the police - behaving inappropriately, from a citizen's perspective, yet investigated only by their own governing body).
Do we need cops with Gloch's on the streets of Canada? NO! We need cops on the streets helping the aging population cross the road! Is Hastings any different? Probably not. Hastings is a pretty tourist town and the seedy side of the tourist industry is petty theft, purse snatching and the odd mugging. Does that make Hastings a dangerous place to be? Yes, if you're the victim! As far as I know, in Hastings, they still don't shoot schizophrenics armed with baseball bats or kids who run away from the police after a robbery or people (when the police SWAT team has erroneously arrived at the wrong house) armed with a broom sweeping their back deck.
Count your blessings, Hastings isn't a police state yet and living in laid back Ontario I dread to think of life in California's walled communities with private security firms acting like vigilante patrols - no thanks! Sure there were fights when I grew up there and probably far more than there are today - but Hastings was safe place and a geat place to live. I sure it still is...
Thanks for the debate - I'm sure this letter will add some fuel.
Cheers,
Bob

My mother (age 83) is also a warbride and I'd like to find this book for her to enjoy. Please advise if you know anything about this book.Unfortunately I do not know the name of the author or the title of the book.

E-mail: joebloggs115@hotmail.comHaving lived around Hastings most of my life, well untill the last 3 yrs,I can see were you are all coming from.
Hastings does have it's good points but what is disturbing is that now the bad points are outwayiny them.Yes you have a lovley new shopping centre at Priory Road,But to what cost the loss of a beautifull cricket ground and now the rest of the general stores around town are derilict and graffitti drawn.
Having visited Alexander park about four summers ago in the mid afternoon amoungst a crowed of young children was a man performing what can only be described as unspeakable acts, and with children around!!!!!!
Hastings has become the dumping ground for the inercitys, how many people in town are from Hasting, and not London!!!!
If you believe in Hastings stand up and be counted organise community events, take action get people involved and have fun.....but most of all make Hastings somewhere that people want to live and not move away to safer places.....
What do you think!!!!!!!!
What a lively debate.

E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.net.Well we have started something now,I have visited a lot of hastings web sites, and yes you are right the (tourist)site are full of glowing reports as to the wonders of hastings, and i wouldn't expect to see anything else on such a site,If as you say Hastings is not a bad place , when was the last time you went for a walk in Alexander park,at night or even in the daytime for that matter, and didnt feel a little vunerable.when was the last time you parked your car in a multi story and didnt feel a sense of relief when you returned to still find it there ,and in one piece. If you have kids ,do you feel happy about them going off on there own,i know i dont, take a good look around you when you are down town next, walk up to a complete stranger and just ask them how there day is going,i suspect that most people will walk away from you , i know this to be true as i have tried it in the past, there isnt the sense of comunity spirit that there used to be,and if people want things to improve then they have to have pride in there town , and in the people in it.

As a local resident that goes about my life and business in Hastings I know its not a bad place to live. These unfortunate incidents, which you read about on www.observeronline.co.uk, are rarities, which take place in towns up and down the country, thats why they make the news. The Hastings Observer does not lie about the news; they just tend to concentrate on the bad side. I recommend you spend some time on the website http://www.hastingsuk.com here you can and get another aspect of Hastings life. Which might inhibit your mud gazing. As the Webmaster of hastingsuk.com I receive lots of mail from ex-pats who write with affection and respect of their former hometown. Your hostility is very rare.
Fond Memories
Date: 28 March, 2001
From: Alan Butler, Toronto, Canada
E-mail: alan.butler@sympatico.caHello ! What a neat site - congratulations!
I was born in Hastings, but left for Canada in 1969 when I found I couldn't support a family working in a local bank. Remember my Dad's store in George Street - Len Butler's Emporium? I was at Hastings Grammar School from 1949 to 1954 and have fond memories of being taught math by Tommy Cookson, Catharine's husband. After 31 years in Canada I still miss the sea, in fact if I close my eyes I can smell the seaweed and hear the sound of the surf, Biddy the Tubman, the pleasure boats, and of course the ice cream vendor shouting " They're lovely, they are nice, plain or choc ".
Keep up the good work !
So the press and my relatives and friends all lie?

E-mail: djmawhite@aol.comI don't know how old you are, but ask anyone who grew up during WW2 and the 50's in Hastings what they think. I know full well that we can't live in the past and things change with so called progress. Hastings on the other hand fell through the cracks when it came to progress and seems to be having one hell of a time catching up. I know things are changing but at what pace?
No! Mission Viejo is not utopia. We have our problems, too much traffic, too many undocumented aliens, fairly bad air quallity and yes, crime. Just about every week when I read the Observer on line there is a mugging, stabbing, assult, vehicle torching and on and on. I don't read that in my daily paper.
If you believe you are being fed a bunch of lies by the Observer then approach them and challenge them on it or else get your head out of the sand.
Thanks dave! For what exactly?
Date: 27 March, 2001
From: Steven Watts, Hastings, Sussex
E-mail: angeliquenoatschk@yahoo.comDerrick what exactly are you thanking Dave for? Is it because you both believe the exaggerated bad press about Hastings. So tell me where would you feel safer? Belfast? Pristina? The Gaza Strip?
Derrick is Mission Viejo, United States the new Utopia? Do they not have social problems and crime there? I think they probably do.
Hastings, over the last decade has had its problems but not on the scale some would have you believe, fortunately those days are coming to an end.
The regeneration of the town has reached breath-taking speed. Old buildings are being renovated, our town centre is almost completed and we will soon have a pier to rival any seaside town.
I will agree with you on one point though, Hastings does have "a real problem" and that is the ATTITUDE TOWARDS HASTINGS. I see why the press hype bad stories about the town; after all they get paid for it. What I cant see is why other people do it.
Thanks Dave

E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.netwell done that man.i remember hastings of old and you are right there was trouble, but usualy mods and rockers etc, todays crime is fed in the main part by people with various habits etc that they are trying to feed,as far as im concerned society has no room for the likes of some young thug mugging a pensioner etc to feed a drug habit.alot of people know who the thugs are at the schools ,but say nothing, and the same people complain about the state of the town, and it is a state i can tell you.if people want things to improve then stand up and be counted,in this day and age its possible to help the police with there enquires without, identifying yourself,we have to teach the younger generations how to live together, and how comunity spirit works, its in everyones intrest to say enough is enough, and help out.
The rough side of Hastings

From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, United States
E-mail: djmawhite@aol.comI to remember the better side of Hastings Tom. Have you read the Observer lately? I remember the tough guys, they settled their differences with their fists if necassary. Do you ever remember any of them pulling a knif or a gun on somebody. When are the people of Hastings going to wake up to the fact that they have a real problem and it is only going to get worse if they don't take the town back.
It's a great town with a lot of character, charm and history, don't let it be destroyed.

Crime
Date: 15 March, 2001
From: Tom Locke, London, Canada
E-mail: tlocke@sympatico.caCriminal activity pervades every corner of society - nowhere is exempt. Hastings has its problems, it always has. I remember the 60s and 70s in Hastings - where I grew up - it was alway an interesting mix, the traditionalists (mostly the fishermen and other locals including retirees) and th modernists (remember the mods and rockers?). Nonetheless Hastings has a wonderful ambiance. I've never felt safer, in spite of its "tough" reputation Hastings always had character.
Hastings (and St. Leonards) is a great place to be: I've lived in London (the real London) and many other places yet in my dreams I'm always drawn to the centre of my youth - Hastings. Perhaps I'm mad or perhaps my recollections are tainted (somehow) but I rember a wonderful place to live and work. Whatever it is you're looking for you'll find in such a beautifully diverse Town.
I remember the tough guys - who used hang out around the memorial - if you played them right they were a lot of fun, just bored kids fed up with the penny arcades really. The hippies used to like the old town - kinda psychadelic man! Stop your whining and enjoy the blessings - Hastings is great place to be....
Write to me, I'd like to hear from you.....

E-mail: thecarrs@telusplanet.netI see on the news that Hastings is getting extra money to help tackle the crime problems that the town has.If people were all a little bit more comunity spirited then alot of the needless crime would stop.people tend to turn the other way and say glad thats not me,instead of helping out in some way,if people want a better environment to live in then do something about it,i hear people say all the time "what are they going to do about it "you should ask yourself what can i do about it.

I sure hope when you do get back to Hastings that you work towards upgrading the town and not degrading it. When you mentioned the Crypt, that was scary. the place isn't what it used to be back in the fifties.

Bring on the summer so when all our Alevels are over and we all finally finish college we can all come back together and have the fun we had back then. But the only thing which has changed about the town since those days is our local hang out the Pig, but were not gonna let that stop us. Remember lets have fun now as we're the future citizens of Hastings, and will have to make the place work for the future young people.
To all the Skaters, all the BMXers and other p*ss heads out there heres to getting wasted! seeya all down the Crypt this week end!

Hi Hastings
My name is Sandra Adams and me and my husband Elliott are travelling around the world in a 100 pound Citroen 2CV. We left at the beginning of June 2000. We have travelled through Europe France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia etc to Iran. From Iran we crossed the Baluchistan Desert into Pakistan, up the Karakoram Highway to the Chinese border 4750m above sea level. We then drove back down into India as the nice border guards wanted
$30,000 to go into China. As we were out of loose change we declined their kind offer. After driving around India we went through Bangladesh to try to get into Burma. Unfortunately, due to a bit of squabbling between the Burmese and Bangladesh armies and the slightly 'wobbly' political situation in Bangladesh we had to return to India. We are now in Calcutta trying to get a ship to Malaysia. We are in an area of Calcutta called Hastings, so we thought we would remenisce as we have some time on our hands.

From: Sandra Radford, Victoria, BC, Canada
E-mail: sradford@pacificcoast.netMy mother, Kathleen Phillips (nee Cruttenden), who now lives in Shelburne Ontario, just north of Toronto, asked me to find out the rates at the Queen's Hotel in Hastings. I tried a number of tourist information sites, but could not find the Queen's Hotel listed. My parents stayed there on one of their infrequent visits, but perhaps it has another name now. Our family - Reginald & Kathleen Phillips, and children Sandra, Ross, and Mark - is from Hastings, but left England in 1956 and again in 1960 to come to Canada. (I've never been back, but know I will soon.) Can anyone please send me information about the Queen's Hotel, or a better place to contact people from the good old days who might remember us? Thank you, and best wishes to all the good folk in Hastings.

Date: 06 January, 2001
From: John Watts f/k/a John Gillam, Summerfield Florida, USA
E-mail: fishchip37@yahoo.comHello St Leonards Folks
Is there anybody still around that remembers me from the mid 40s-early 50s.
I went to Christ Church school on Alfred St/London Rd. Then I went to Uplands Technical School which was near St Leonards Gardens. I was known as John Gillam for a good part of that time.
I lived on London Rd across from the church and next to the theater, for a couple of years and then we moved to Norman Rd, right at the end of Gensing Rd.
My step-father, Arthur Watts, worked at the "Warriors Gate", and I am related to the Clark family that lived at 27 Alfred St. during that time.
I moved to the US in the summer of 1951.
If your memory goes back that far, let me know. I expect to be in the U K in a couple of months and would dearly like to see some boyhood friends.
