Help on Bayeux Tapestry research

Date: 23 October, 2002
From: DURAND Jean-François, Nogent-le-Roi, France
E-mail: Jjefdurand@aol.com

Hello,

Will you please pardon the mistakes I make in your language.

I am a native from Bayeux and search informations or documentation(s) about the end of the Tapestry of Bayeux. In England two ladies made a final scene of this embroidery. One is Ms Jan MESSENT and I don't know the other one.

In any way if someone can give me the address of the first, the name and address of the second one I will be very glad.

A tapestry of the Battle of Hastings does exist also. Is it possible to have some information about it.

A thousand thanks to anyone who can help me.

J-F DURAND

Hastings...

From: Val Halla, San Diego, USA
E-mail: valhallaknight@hotmail.com

You've just got to love it, what a wonderful place to be - I'm getting excited about next year's vacation already. The cockles at the fish market - soaked in Malt Vinegar, mmmm!!!! Hastings rock - everyone loves a piece of rock!

The smell of the sea - so refreshing. Great dining and pubbing experiences. A walk along the seafront watching kids performing amazing bicycle gymnastics°.

That stoney old beach with the rocks emerging at low tide°. Fresh and clean!

No broken bottles on the beaches, no druggiesê needles for the kids to play with, no gun shots and police sirens, air you can breath, tap water you can drink, lovely! I think Iêll come back again and again°.

I was at school in the early 60's at St Josephs Bexhill on sea. My life had been blighted by horific memories of that time. the very mention of Hastings sent shivers down my back. in 1997 I returned to Hastings and was so glad I did. My past can never go away but to return there with my husband made me feel so much better. Marie

Recent Visit to Hastings

Date: 05 September, 2002
From: Val Halla, San Diego, USA
E-mail: valhallaknight@hotmail.com

Sadly the castle has lost a few more stones and was closed during my visit - so I missed the Whispering Dungeons. Even more sadly the old Roman Bath at Summerfields is even worse neglect than ever - it may have been constructed as a folly during Victorian times but it is a shame nonetheless....

The old Enterprise is still in the Fisherman's Museum and it was great to see that the East Hill lift is still operational. The pier has had some work done but is in need of more and the downtown core as a pedestrian area - wow!

I was surprised to see that interest in lawn bowling has apparently dropped off and many of the Oval's bowling greens are unused. Hastings used to be very much a retirement community but now seems to have a larger population of young people.

I was unable to find the Brail Plaques that made the "Blind Gardens" so famous but the carp are still there. Generally speaking the people were as warm and friendly as I remembered them...

Change is inevitible and isn't all bad.

Mission Viejo Watershed Cleanup - Volunteers are Required

Date: 04 September, 2002
From: Val Halla, San Diego, USA
E-mail: valhallaknight@hotmail.com

It's all a matter of perception really isn't it? Wherever we live in this world we can always find it in our hearts to criticize others more readily than to accept responsibility for what we do and what we can change....

In some parts of the world toxic substances are poured down the drain (daily) in a very irresponsible manner by heartless people. These substances are poluting the water that we drink and killing wildlife at a phenomenal rate. I hope that isn't happening in Hastings. But take heart, the news isn't all bad Mission Viejo has organized an "inner -coastal watershed clean up day" and I'll bet that Derek has volunteered.

"The County of Orange and all of the cities in Orange County are committed through the Cooperative Stormwater Program to controlling the discharge of pollutants into the storm drain system. As part of this effort, a comprehensive list of waste oil collection centers has been compiled by region so residents may conveniently dispose of their waste motor oil.

The following locations within each city will accept waste motor oil in quantities of up to five gallons. Since locations, volume limits, business hours and fees change, please contact the facility prior to taking waste oil to that location. Waste oil filters may not be disposed of with regular household trash and must be taken to a hazardous waste collection or recycling center in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Irvine or San Juan Capistrano. The listing of companies on this web site does not constitute a recommendation or endorsement of the company.

This information was provided by the County of Orange Integrated Waste Management Department and the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB). For additional information about the proper disposal of household hazardous waste call the Household Waste Hotline at (714) 834-6752. For additional information about the nearest oil recycling center call the CIWMB Recycling Hotline at 1-800-553-2962."

Not to be critical

Date: 03 September, 2002
From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, USA
E-mail: djmawhite@cox.net

Can't blame a person for remembering how it was.
I remember the times that I would walk home from a pier dance in the fifties on my own at midnight and think nothing of it. I would walk along the sea front and through George Street,up the High Street and Old London Road where I lived. How many people in Hastings would do that now. Let's be honest now. At least where I live now I would not be woried.I live in an open community with friendly neighbors, no walls or guards.
I know Hastings has a lot going for it but a lot of the people that I have spoken to don't seem to want to get involved. Sadly to say some of those are my relatives and friends. As for the beach, can it be said that it stacks up to the Southern California beaches. True, we have smog but that is a trade of for all the good things just as there are trade offs for living in Hastings.
During my last visit some two years ago I was very please to see that the buildings along the sea front were being renovated and that they were trying to do something about the traffic problems.
I have been away too long to want to move back to Hastings, so I probably should not be too critical. How about it all of you that are loyal Hastonions, It's up to you, so lets hear from you as well as the expatriates
Derek

Messages on the board...

From: Val Halla, San Diego, USA
E-mail: valhallaknight@hotmail.com

Given that this site appears to have been set up to allow people to contact each other and share information and views about Hastings I think it only fair that balanced views be presented. By that I mean positive and negative. I love Hastings and feel that some people have the same of the Town - but there are others who have divergent views and they are equally entitled to them.

Here in San Diego we live in a walled community with security guards patrolling 24/7. Personally I find Hastings far more peaceful and relaxing. Sure there have been a couple of shootings featured in the Observer but we'd get more of that in one day in LA than Hastings would see in a decade. And the polution we have out here is beyond belief there is thick greenish colored cloud hanging over the valley all year round - especially in the summer. Our coastline is digusting and makes anything about Hastings seem pristine.

I guess some of the people who seem to be making negative comments have such fond memories of Hastings that they "feel" every blemish on the Town. Kind of like the Princess and the pea - remember the fairytale? As for our friends to the North they are known for their peacemaking efforts.

Hastings and the truth

From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, USA

What is wrong with all these ex Hastings people that left hastings and ran to Canada for the better life. Can they not stand some critcism, instead of jumping all over those that bring up the negative aspects of the town, be specific and point out the good things. I know they are there and I try to get back at least every two years to see them.
Come on people don't get so up tight. This board has been pretty quiet lately so lets get some construtive dialog going.

I can not understand why Derek White bothers to slag Hastings all the time, he must love the place so much to waste so much time running it down. Where you live, the newspapers never give out good news, it just does'nt sell.
Having grown up in Hastings and gone to Priory Road in the fifties and done my apprenticeship in the Old Town and left England in 1970, I feel priviledged to be a Hastonian. I return to Hastings at least once a year and if it were'nt for my children and grandchildren, I would move back tomorrow. Hastings violence and homicide rates are nothing compared to towns of a compareable size in the U.S.A (even Warrior Square).
I would suggest that if you have nothing good to say, then say nothing. HASTINGS IS O.K.

You obviously do not read the Observer online.
Maybe you don't get it at the third rock from the sun. I would guess that place where ever it is, is in a worst sorry state than Hastings.

Having recently visited for the first time in about 25 years I have this to report:

I would be no more afraid of running the streets late at night than I was then. But then I am a big fella - 220lbs and a martial artist to boot! And, being twenty-five years older I'd be less inclined that way anyway.

But really, Warrior Square has become a bit seedier than it was - it was heading that way a long time ago.

However, happy to report that the Cockles taste great in the Old Town and the fish and chips are still good. The Olde Pump House is still in good repair and the Lord Nelson hasn't changed. What has changed is our attitudes we're all ?? years older and have different expectations. I'd live there, in a minute. Nothing to be afraid of.

Lovely place to be - looking forward to next year's visit

Section 5 - the Hastings drummers

Date: 18 July, 2002
From: Alan Grfiffiths, Hastings, UK
E-mail: agriffiths@fastmail.fm

Section 5 are now an independent drumming group with no affiliation to any clubs or societies.

We practise at the Carlisle pub in Hastings - or on the beach if it's good weather - on Monday nights at 8 pm.Practise makes perfect - which is why we do it - it also ensures our standards continue to rise.

New members of all ages, abilities and gender are welcome, you will need a drum.

We have booking for several carnivals throughout the summer and for local bonfires during the season. We will cover our travel expenses for these events and the rest goes to local charities.

The groups processional kit is black and red - top hats and tails if you wish - but not necessary - it should be something other than ordinary street clothes - but need not cost a fortune.

If you want to have fun with a drum and help raise some charitable funds
contact me by email.

Cheers

Alan

I guess everybody must be on holiday or maybe the weather is too nice to be indoors at the computer. I havn't heard too much of what is going on in Hastings lately, except what I read in the online Observer. I was told not to believe every thing I read in the Observer. So, who is going to give me the scuttlebut. I hope every one is enjoying the summer and keeping their wits about them. We over here tend to question just about everything these days.
Not to worry the strong will survive.

Smuggling at Bexhill...second request

Date: 19 June, 2002
From: Robin D. Kullick, Chicago, Illinois, USA
E-mail: asackville@juno.com

Hi all!

This is the second posting of this request. I thought since there is more activity on the board I'd try again.

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I'm doing some research on smuggling weaponry in the 16th Century and have come across a passage in the book "The Queen's Gunstonemaker", which states that in 1574 Lord Dacre (Gregory Fiennes) was listed along with a line of other Nobility/Gentry for selling/smuggling guns to the Spanish. I'm completely intrigued and am wondering if anyone has further info on this. I'd also be very interested on anything regarding Lord Buckhurst (Thomas Sackville) in this matter.

The information is to be used in a dramatic piece to be performed in about a month's time. I can work without the extra info, if there is any, but would love to go in "armed to the teeth", so to speak.

Thanks!
Robin

Hello again Hastings

From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, California, USA
E-mail: madjwhite@aol.com

Hi: It's nice to see the message board is getting used again. Sorry, I can't help any of you with your recent requests. Some of the name are familiar to me but they do not register anything with me.
So, how is Hastings these days. I havn't been back in 18 months so I am not up to speed on whats happening. My wife said I have to be nice and not so critical as it tends to upset certain people that use this medium.
I certainly don't intend to get people upset but when I hear and see certain things that are happening I speak up, right or wrong. At least it stirs the pot and hopefully gets a meaningful dialog going.
Like to say hi to someone that has missed me on the board. Hi Frank and Pam in Bristol.
For now Hastings, have a great summer and a prosperous one.

Dengate Family

Date: 28 May, 2002
From: ceara alexander, Ft. Scott, US
E-mail: irishfairyqueen@hotmail.com

I was wondering about the Dengate Family. I have relatives who are Dengates and this is a present for them. My Dengate family moved from England in about 1858, after James Dengate died. He was the grandfather of my great-grandmother. I am not too worried about finding their history. I know that James' wife, Harriet Catt Dengate took the two sons to Pennsylvania and I know the rest of it, but I do need to know if Sussex, England is where the Dengate name originated. If not, where? Is there some family history connected? Some land, passed down the years, even an old scandal would be something, because I cannot find ANYTHING on the family, just a few members. If anyone could help me with some websites or things to search. Is there a coat of arms or anything? No place has been able to find anything. Hopefully someone out here can.

Book Quest

Date: 16 May, 2002
From: Johan Gezels, Belgium,
E-mail: johangezels@hotmail.com

Dear Sir/Madam,

Let me first introduce myself. My name is Johan Gezels. I am a Belgian citizen with a special interest in English literature.

Lately I bought a strange book in a second hand bookshop in Brussels. It has an unusual (but beautiful) title: "Your books, my son" and it is published by the Oxford University Press in 1934. The name of the author is not mentioned because it was published in a small number of copies for private use. All I know is that the author lived in Westfield Place in Sussex and that his father was Sir Alfred Newton (Lord Mayor of London in 1900).

Do you know anything about this mysterious writer who owned a wonderful library of rare books?

Is there still a manor in Westfield Place with descendants from the Newton family?

I would very much appreciate if you could help me to solve this mystery.

Many thanks in advance.

With best regards,
Johan Gezels

Flat for sale in Hastings?

Date: 13 May, 2002
From: Samantha, Amsterdam, Holland
E-mail: genx@planet.nl

Can anyone help me find a flat in Hastings?
I'm looking to buy a flat in Hastings for up to 75,000 but as I live in Holland at the moment, can't find anything because properties are moving too fast.
I'm not in any chain, and have finances, so if you want to sell and avoid agents' fees, please e-mail me, or if you know someone who wants to sell up.

I can come over to the UK at very short notice, or get a relative nearby to view the flat for me.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Family history search

Date: 09 May, 2002
From: Brenda Eastwood, Bayindeen, Victoria, Australia
E-mail: stp@netconnect.com.au

G'day from Oz. I'm delighted to find this site. I have wonderful memories of trips to Hastings with my parents when I was a child. My father's cousin had a bed and breakfast in Hastings. Her name was Milly (or Millie) and her maiden name was Lorraine. Her mother was Dolly Lorraine. My father was Arthur Hand from Bermondsey,London. I believe Dolly was my grandmother Hand's sister which would make her maiden name "Biddle" but am not sure. I'd love to find Milly's descendants to have a chat and discuss family history.

Oh - that wonderful, heart-stopping ride from the cliff top down to the beach!

Best wishes
Brenda Eastwood

Traditional Jazz Fans -are you there???

From: Alan Butler, Toronto, Canada
E-mail: alan.butler@sympatico.ca

I went to a pub/restaurant called C'est What? in Toronto a couple of Saturdays ago to hear the Hot Five Jazzmakers and met up again with the trombonist,Brian Towers, who was a regular with The Dolphin Jazz Band at The Hastings Jazz Club in the 1960's. We actually both worked at Lloyds Bank, Wellington Place, and moved to Canada in 1969, then lost touch for 30 years ! So we have spent quite a while lately reminiscing about the old days in Hastings. We send our best wishes, and encourage all you residents to enjoy the attractions of the town, 'cos you sure miss them when you leave !

Need To Find Info On A School In Hastings

Date: 16 April, 2002
From: Laurence Dean Saliba, London, UK
E-mail: thenytemare@btinternet.com

Hi

I used to go to a boarding school in St Leonards, I left about 1992 but I knew people there until 1995.

I am trying to get in touch with the school to do a web site for them but they seem to have vanished, I know they were a Lambeth run boarding school back then but Lambeth have no records of the school nor do any of the other london boroughs.

I asked another website that has a "ask hastings" quesiton type thing and the reply I got was that the school is still there but it had changed it's name.

I used a post code finder and the only thing that I have found is a church, I do remember the school was next door to what I think was some kind of a day centre for handicapped people (although I may be wrong on that)

The address I have is :

George Rainey School
66 London Road
St Leonards Warrior Square
Sussex TN

That is all I have, across the road from the school is a slope that leads to the St Leonards Warrior Square station (is that station still there?).

I would love to get in touch with any of the teachers that know me

Mr Allen Jackson
Mrs Morse
Mr Hughes
Mrs Hughes
Mr Harkins
Mrs Crump

Or any of the staff that remember the terror that was Laurence Saliba :)

Thanks

Smuggling in Bexhill

Date: 15 April, 2002
From: Robin D. Kullick, Chicago, Illinois, USA
E-mail: asackville@juno.com

Hi all!

Thanks!
Robin

Where is every one

From: Derek White, Mission Viejo, California, USA
E-mail: djmawhite@aol.com

Hello Hastings, Where are all the computer people. Don't be shy, let us know how you feel about your town and the world the way it is today. Don't hold back, give it your best shot. What do you think of President Bush and Tony Blair. I'm on their side and only wish I was young enough to get out there with the boys and help clean up the terrorists. What do you young people think?
OK so how are things going in Hastings? It saddens me to read the Observer on line about all the crime that is happening. I know there must be some good things over there. I miss the fish and chips and the 1950's dances on the pier. Those were the days.
I sincerely hope this propells some of you to add a message.
God bless you all and good luck.
Derek

For all of you out there looking for news of old schools and school friends try the Friends Reunited site. It lists all schools, colleges, universities plus lists of pupils. I have been trying to find information about St. Margaret's school for ages and have just found it on this site and names of many school friends.
St. Margarets closed in the 1960's so do not think your school will not be there because it closed years ago. Have fun but beware the site is addictive as is this one!!

Hi Tom: I don't know what it is going to take to get there Hastonians going. So far in the three years that I have been at this site I have made contact with one old school mate that now lives in Bristol and a lady from Hastings that is now living in Florida.
I was back in Hastings twice last year and don't expect to go this year but hopefully early next year.

For those of you in Hastings that read this and those in other countries, if you know any of these people say hello to them for me. Peter Mitchel, Anne Kicks (maiden name),Gordon Message, Janice Gorringe (maiden name),Arther (tich) Woodcock,Tino Lucas, Cherry Lucas,Mick Jones. I could go on but that will do for now. I would like to add that southern California is a nice place to be this time of the year. Day time temps are around the high seventies to low eighties, farenheit that is.

Well, this is a start if anything interesting happens I will be back on.
