Re WOOD relatives
Date: 31 December, 1996
From: Lesley Hudson, Houston Tx, USA
E-mail: lhudson701@aol.comHi there Hastings
It's me again,(lesley in Houston), getting a little further in my research on the WOOD family, 1881 census returns show my great grandfather Henry WOOD age 17 living in a Hotel in Hastings Holy ?
(something) the hotel owner being Fredrick Jexley, Henry's occupation list's only the word 'Boot',(maybe shoeshining?) and that he was a servant at the hotel. My Great Grandmother (Ellen PADDEN) is shown as living at PADDENS cottage in Hastings All sts.
with her mother and 2 brothers William and Edward. Is Padden cottage still standing? Are there any Padden's out there in Hastings today? Does anyone know what church is in st Leonards and All sts?
Once again thank you so very much for this notice board and all the best for 1997.

Grove School Re-union planned for March 97.
Date: 23 December, 1996
From: Russell Hutson, Hastings, UK
E-mail: hutson@farcrown.demon.co.ukIf you're about to turn the big 3-0, and u went to the Grove between 1979 and 1983/85, then isn't it about time we all got together 4 a drink or 3?
We're gradually tracking people down & have a number of like minded alcoholics who plan to attend.
A venue has been provisionally booked for March 97 (1 night so far, not the whole month :) ).
So, reply via E-mail, or check out http://www.farcrown.demon.co.uk for my details. This will save us calling every number in the local phone book to track u down :). We'll even consider letting teachers come.

Information on the 1066 Country and Heritage
Date: 14 December, 1996
From: Ronald van Luttikhuizen, Leerdam, The Netherlands
E-mail: j.maale@pi.net14 December 1996,
Dear Sir/Madam,
This year I am in the sixth form of the PWA college in Leerdam, the Netherlands. A part of our examinations is to make a form about a special part of England. Because I read a lot about Hastings I chose it as my subject together with East-Sussex. My teacher said that I should contact the 1066 Country and the Heritage because they can provide much general information and information on natural beaty and historical places/events about Hastings and East-Sussex.
Would you please send some information regarding the 1066 Country and Heritage in East-Sussex and/or Hastings? It would help me a great deal in making my paper for English. My address is the following:
Ronald van Luttikhuizen
Palissade 3
4143 GA Leerdam
The Netherlands
I would like to thank you in advance for all the trouble you will take.
Yours sincerely,
Ronald van Luttikhuizen

I'm really happy to find Hastings on Internet.
I was there two months on summer 1989, and 6 weeks on summer 1990,
just for learning English, but I learnt a lot more of things.
I was happy when revisited your town on January 1995. It was
very different, very different than before. Sunday afternoon,
it was raining, and no people on the street, but so beautiful,
so true.
My best wishes to ITS English school. I'll write you again !

Research help
Date: 27 November, 1996
From: Joe Gillon, Ann Arbor, MI, USA
E-mail: joe@umich.eduI'm writing a mystery that takes place during the Hastings 1895 chess tournament, and occasionally need some research done at the scene. Needless to say, I can't pop over to England several times a year. I see from the Virtual Hastings pages that there are 2 chess clubs and a historical society. Surely someone there has an email address and would be interested. Drop me a line, okay?

Pinnacles Beach Backpackers
Date: 15 November, 1996
From: Tony Lambert, Cervantes, Western Australia
E-mail: quill@ca.com.auGreetings One & All,
I am currently building a custom designed, 'up market' Backpackers facility at the town of Cervantes, just 2 1/2 hours drive north of Perth, Western Australia. Being purpose built we have included several large family rooms plus a roomy double with en-suite. This magnificent edifice is now rising up from the pristine sands of Cervantes Beach, and we are right next to the States major tourist attraction, The Pinnacles Desert. I've just launched a commercial web site http://www.ca.com.au/pbb/ which details the area and activities. When I was a day dreaming paper boy dawdling down Wishing Tree Road, St Leonards, I used to dream about one day having a huge house on a gleaming white beach. Being a firm believer in making dreams come true, it had to happen one day.
We hope to open our doors to the international travelling public on December 20 1996, and thereafter play host to adventurous Hastings folk who may be visiting the area known as 'The Gem of The Turquoise Coast.' We promise to make it a most memorable occasion.
The next step will be setting up a 4 wheel drive tours operation as there are many natural attractions in the surrounding national parks. Hope to hear from some of you before too long.
Best regards,
Tony Lambert.

Any WOOD relatives?
Date: 23 October, 1996
From: Lesley Hudson, Houston Tx, USAHi everyone;
Just started my family tree and was told by my uncle that my roots are in Hastings. I am from the uk but am now living in Houston Tx.
I was hoping that I might be able to contact some relatives as it seems that the WOOD family was fairly stable there until around the early 20th century. My Grandfather (Edward James WOOD) was born in St Leonards in 1888; his father was Henry WOOD any conections?
I am also eager to learn more about Hastings, any penpals or pictures etc would be gratefully appreceated. You can e-mail me at LHUDSON701@aol.com
Many thanks for this message board. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Hastings, Michigan, USA
Hastings, Nebraska, USA
Hastings, North Island, New Zealand

How many places called Hastings are there?
Date: 17 October, 1996
From: The Editor, Hastings, East Sussex, EnglandAs you can see, our new 1066 Message Board is up and running. Let's hope it proves popular.
Please feel free to contribute a comment or message - preferably something about Hastings or the 1066 Country of East Sussex. Maybe you want to ask a question that another visitor can answer. Maybe you're looking for an e-mail pen friend. Or maybe you just want to say "hello" to other visitors.
NOTE: When you add a message, please don't click the 'SUBMIT' button more than once: one click is enough and a second click will just add your message again. When you return to this page after adding a message, you must Reload this page to see your message.
AND PLEASE: no silly messages! This message board is unmoderated (submissions are added automatically by our server). It would be a shame if we have to change this and check each message manually before it is added.
To start the ball rolling, here's a question that someone may be able to answer:
How many towns and cities are there in the world called Hastings? I believe there's a Hastings in Ontario, Canada, and another in New York state, but I'm sure there are lots of others. If you know of any, please post a message here. The Editor,
Hastings & The 1066 Country.P.S. Today is just 930 years and 3 days after the Battle of Hastings (October 14, 1066). William the Conqueror had a reputation for being organised and systematic: if the Normans had had computers, the Domesday Book would certainly have been on a database!
