Happy New Year Wishes to everyone
Date: 26 December, 1997
From: Mary Jo West, St Leonards on Sea, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.comBOXING DAY -- 1997
It was a beautiful day when I woke,
There was no snow about,
Maybe there was over the lake.
The birds were singing, the music playing,
The breeze flowing through the window,
and my heart was shining.
It was a new day dawning,
The excitement of Christmas now gone
But not forgotten. People everywhere,
Like myself, still thinking, contemplating the real meaning,
The real meaning of Christmas, and The Queens speech.
Relaxing in the new day,
I wondered what the New Year would bring,
Friends old and new, friends that have been close,
Friends that have been hurt, would they come too,
Who knows what the New Year brings.
The sky was mottled all grey, with shades of blue creeping through,
The song on radio was relaxing too,
The sound of bird, vanishing, as my hearing sometimes does,
Yes, Christmas is the time of year for all to experience lifeÍs beauty, feelings of friendship, family, and the joy of GodÍs saving powers,
I give thanks to all my friends, past and present, and shower my love over the whole world, and hope one day, that my words will shine in someoneÍs heart, and they too will find the beauty that found me.
God Bless, and I hope Happy New Years will bring forth fruit for many a year to come to everyone.

Hastings & Surrounding villages

From: M Burke, Peasmarsh, UK
E-mail: NiceWork@compuserve.comWell it's a bit of a surprise seeing Battle described as a village! Anybody out there have any memories of Peasmarsh or Beckley - especially pre 1950's? Apparentlty all the world knows that the gentry used to live in Beckley and the workers in Peasmarsh. I need proof!

I think he's crazy. I visit Hastings every 4 or 5 years and have just returned after a week's trip. The town center of Hastings has changed out of all recognition, and is a fantastic example of what can be done to counteract the trend towards out-of-town shopping malls, with the consequent decay of town centers.
Hastings town center used to be for cars; it's now a town center for people. Tne new shopping center is excellent; it looks good, the shops are first class and seem to be doing good business. Of course there are still some available shop sites - it's a new development.
I once went to the old Cricket Ground to see a match. There were about 20 people attending!
There aren't many towns in my part of the US of comparable size that have centers as nice as Hastings now has.
I'll be coming again and again.
Regards to all my Hastings friends.

From: Anita Hoeg Pedersen, Viborg, Denmark
E-mail: anita.h.pedersen@mailexcite.comHello Hastings!
Just to say hello to any of my friends who might look at this page.
It's been just over two years since I left Hastings, but I still miss you all a lot. Not a week goes by without thinking of you. I was on a visit in May to practice my English, but I didn't have much time to see any of you and you've all moved around. So if any of you see this message please send me a note. I'd just love to hear from you.
Just to remember who I was:
Anita Hoeg Pedersen, at the time 16 years old (94/95). Danish. Did GCSE at Hastings College in Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and IT. Blond, 5foot5 (don't know how to write that). Almost always in a good mood when I didn't have a hangover. Addicted to taxies and mad about Michael Jackson. Loved pubbing, nightclubbing and parties (The Crypt on Monday nights, Saturdays (I know it has a new name now) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays). In the daytime I was usually at College, Rocky's or Elphinestone Rd.
I'd love to hear from anyone who might remember me.
Lots of love,
Anita
Town Centre
Date: 09 October, 1997
From: Rob Dyer, Hastings, England
E-mail: red@mhs.compd.comThis message board has been getting very boring lately. Why don't many people from Hastings write in with their comments about the town? How about this for starters.....
People may know my views on the Priory Meadow 'shopping centre' already, but another factor which shows the gross incompetence of the council and managers is we now have another card shop opened up - as if we needed one. There are also 3 sports shops now in the small shopping centre too showing how desperate the council are to let the premises, many of which are still boarded up after 6 months.
Where's Roger Carrier - has he done a runner? I would if I was him.
It's a disgrace that we've lost the lovely Cricket Ground for a failing, badly built, tiny shopping centre. What does anyone else think?

looking for corbell or corbeil geneology
Date: 15 September, 1997
From: m. smith, western, usa
E-mail: leduc1@ix.netcom.comhello,
i am interested in information re the corbell (possible original spelling of "corbeil") family. i have heard that they were involved in the battle of hastings and are originally from normandy. i also have heard that they were hugenots who fled france during the religious uprisings in 1590s. the first group is thought to have settled in the (now) virginia beach area of virginia (usa) around 1600.
there's a lot of time lapsed between 1066 and 1600. if you can confirm any of the above or if you have any germane information (that's a joke, there was a "germaine de corbell"), i would love to hear from you.
my thanks in advance,

Date: 31 August, 1997

E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.com
Diana, Princess of Wales
Died tragically in Paris on 31st August, 1997
Eternally at Peace
She was radiant at the day of her death,
As I looked on at the memories of her world,
The Diary of a Princess, she had a lovely giggle,
She was a human, on this land we call Earth. She was a mum, such a lovely looking mum,
With blond hair, and sometimes, such a beautiful stare,
She always looked glamorous, even on her off days,
For our Princess, was a star. She gave so much of herself, it didn't matter where,
She would sit in a land-rover, well, at least that's what I saw,
She would walk along a path, with a mask on her face,
But our Princess, was a star. She took a path sometimes, through illnesses like us,
She had troubles in her life, just like us,
She cried, she cried, just like the rest of us,
See, our Princess, was a human, just like the rest of us.She loved to have a dance, a ballerina she wanted to be,
But too tall I believe they said she would be,
But when I used to see her, dancing on the TV,
She showed so much elegance, she could have been a swan out at sea.She was a friend, in my heart, nothing more could she be,
But she was a treasure, some could not see,
For she gave our world, our land, and our people,
Goodness from her heart, why did her death have to be.But nothing in this world, can bring our dear Princess back,
So let us all be grateful for the goodness she gave us,
Let us remember her, with happiness in our souls,
For she is now free, eternally at peace.© 31.8.97 MARY JO WEST

I listened without trauma, not really knowing why,
And then, I became tired, shocked, and knew this was the way,
Princess of Wales, died in Paris, my friend I had in my heart,
I could not understand, and still don't know why.
My tears they came, they flooded, they fell,
The shock that I would not meet, this girl that touched my heart,
When I realised she had died, I remembered,
I remembered the letter, the letter she had sent.
She thanked me, she was grateful, for my thoughtfulness,
She thanked me, for my poem, my poem, that was only my heart and me,
I will never meet her, now on this earth,
But, she's in my heart, she left a special part of her heart.
She loved so much of life, she took so much hassle,
But she was a strong person, and I'm glad she found love,
She got so very thin, she became so very ill,
But she gave so much, so much she could give.
She held anothers hand, she didn't care at all,
Of course aids worried others, but care she gave to all,
I am so proud that I knew her, even through at a distance,
Princess of Wales, I pray, that you have found happiness and peace at last.

As a footnote to this poem, I give a special part of my heart to a friend who helped me with my tears when I heard the news. I pray, that our friendship will live as long as my friendship will live with the Princess of Wales - for without my friend, I would still be in tears and not writing this remembrance of a woman like us, a lady that gave so much to life, who cared with compassion for all.

E-mail: knutsson@island.netHi and greetings from the Comox Peninsula of mid Vancouver Island,

was on my own and had a wonderful time in the area. Just before I
got back on the train, I had a lovely lamb supper in one of the restaurants in downtown Hastings. I have been back to the UK two other times and hopefully I return in the future. And I wouldn't mind returning to Hastings! The UK is so wonderfully rich in history that I just can't get enough. Cheers

I visit Hastings every year that I return to England - at this time I am in contact with Doug Hersee, who remains optomistic in spite of ill health. E-mail: bobford@powerup.com.auI attended Priory Rd school until 1970 and went to Hastings College of Further Education in an attempt to gain the o/levels I missed out on through paying too much attention to the soccer and cricket ball---or so I was told!! Left England in 1974 to play soccer in Australia and although I am now 43 but still play and am involved in coaching. Are there any soccer or cricket buffs from Hastings that might be able to update me on the fortunes of the two Hastings sides or indeed anyone from Priory Road School. Is Stephen Rolls out there? I replied to your message some weeks ago but haven't had a reply. Perhaps my e-mail never reached you?My family still live in Hastings, a town which brings me many happy memories. Who can forget the summer months when we enjoyed the visits from the Scandanavian students?!!Be nice to hear from someone.Hi Sunshine, thanks for your e-mail. From: Mary Jo West, St Leonards on Sea, England UK
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.comIn response to a little girls picture in the Evening Argus dated Wednesday July 23rd 1997 -
Evening Argus came to mind,
A little ray of sunshine there I spied,
A little face so pure and sweet,
Beauty, colourful, a real live treat.
Eyes of brown, glaring at me,
A little smile, no pain to see,
So much beauty there I see,
And then the Argus decides to tell me.
A little brave girl, Claire Bennett her name,
Died of cancer, a stem tumour on her brain,
She died so brave doing her charity work,
She did her best, even though in pain.
I feel she was such a brave little girl,
She looks so beautiful as she looks at me,
I never knew this little girl,
But I can feel her as she looks at me.
She has such an awe, a beauty about her,
She reminds me of a little film star,
So much colour, lovely brown hair,
A lovely pink outfit, that gives her flare.
So much beauty, so much heart,
Helping her parents nearly to the end,
Helping the charity with her tombola stalls,
I'm so glad, I met her.
God Bless little Claire
Love always

E-mail: willieb@cdsnet.netI'm looking for links to the family's ancestral name of Brieryhurst. It was later spelled Brirehurst and had severalother spelling derivations. Since it ended with a "hurst", I have been informed that it probably originated in the Sussex area somewhere. Has anyone heard of anything close? My 3rd G. Grandfather came to the American colonies around 1775-1780 (Apparently as part of the British Navy to get the Americans squared away). Then he just stayed on a while. At least he wasn't a sore loser. So if you've heard of a place or family named Brieryhurst, I would really appreciate being contacted. Thanks!

Music Sessions
Date: 05 April, 1997
From: Peter Bolwell, Hastings, England
E-mail: piff@netcomuk.co.ukDoes anyone know if there are any informal jazz or blues "sessions" happening anywhere in or near Hastings, where people can just turn up with an instrument and join in ?
I know there was an attempt to start up something of the sort in "The Guitar Bar" in Claremont, but whenever I went there nothing seemed to be going on.
Alternatively, anybody out there want to play rhythm-and-blues and need a saxophone player?
Regards,
Peter

They ran a boarding house for coalmine workers. John Arto's father was a coalminer also. John had a sister Helen in Chicago, Illinois, around 1939-1943? Grandfather John was born in the USA in 1890. Esther was born in 1887, came to US in early 1900's through Ellis Island, I think.

Wartling Ancestors
Date: 16 March, 1997
From: Ian Billenness, London, United Kingdom
E-mail: ian.billenness@virgin.netI am researching the Billenness family history. My current research stops in 1741 when James Billenness married Sussana Hoad in Wartling. I have no knowledge of James prior to his marriage.
It has been conjectured in my family that James was a Dutch smuggler who either landed or was shipwrecked in the early 1700's, furthermore the Billenness family are thought to have involved in smuggling in the Pevensey Marsh area up until circa 1800.
I would be very pleased to hear from anyone that has any knowledge of the Billenness family around this time or indeed from anyone that has done research into smuggling in the area.

BILLIE-JO JENKINS (13 Years)
Date: 02 March, 1997
From: Mary Jo West (Sunshine), Hastings, East Sussex, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.comBILLIE-JO JENKINS (13 years) was found bludgeoned by an 18in. tent spike on her garden patio on 15th February, 1997. This should not in any way make Hastings a nasty place to visit or live in. This could have taken place anywhere in the country or world!
I do not know who killed her yet, but this is how I felt on Saturday, 1st March, 1997, two weeks after her death. I met Billie-Jo for the first time in our local newspaper, Hastings & St. Leonards Observer, Friday, 21st February, 1997. I then wrote this poem when I actually felt I met her truly, 1st March 1997.
- Mary Jo West. The Time I Met You
I did not know you but I see your face
Your eyes they tell me you have beautiful grace
Your teeth are shining, so perfect in line
You seem so alive, if only you had timeYour hair so beautiful, flowing free like the wind
If only I'd known you, what was in your mind
I look at your eyes, through my eyes that pain me
I'm glad I can still see, although I'm going blindYour ear-ring so modern in this world of ours
What was your life like, if only I'd known
A person who knew you, told me yesterday
That you were a nice person, a nice person to knowWhy this had to happen, God only knows
But Billie-Jo remember, you are safe with God now
He will take care of you, and now you can live
Happy and alive, free like the windEternity I feel is the best life of all
But you had the right to live your life full
But circumstances never can right this for you
But I shall remember, the time I met youCopyright © 1997 MARY JO WEST

My Father is returning to Hastings (for a six week holiday) after a 37 year absence . He is trying to locate whom he believes is his only living relative , his cousin . He has not seen her since he migrated to Australia in 1960 .
Unfortunately , he only knows her Maiden name , "Dorrell". Her first name is "Gemma" . She was born around 1936 . She was last known to be residing in the Crawley area . She is the daughter of the sister of the late "Jane Ethel May Phillips" , who was residing in Brighton before she migrated to Australia in 1964.
Would anybody know whom I could contact , a Registery or some Government body , in relation to acertaining whether she is still living and her current whereabouts?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.....

we'd like to move to Hastings
Date: 23 January, 1997
From: jenni and tony, ryde isle of wight, england
E-mail: jen.snowtrax@easynet.co.ukHello Hastings,
we live on the Isle of Wight with views from our roof bedroom across the Solent to Portsmouth. Sounds idyllic? Yes but it takes an hour and a half from Portsmouth to Waterloo and the ferries don't connect well with the London service. then, of course, there's the cost of the ferries. I like to get up to London quite a bit and need to stay later than I can with these bad connections.
So we thought a move to Hastings would refresh us ( after 17 years on the Island!!!)but after so long in one place we seem to have gathered most of the Island into our house and would have to move to an equally roomy place.
Can anyone help with a bit of chat about the areas we might look at, considerinfg I don't drive and need the station quite a bit, Tony does drive so we'd like a garage or off road parking. We want somewhere with a view of the sea, or the harbour, or hills or something sweeter than other people's walls. We don't need to be near to schools. Our lad has flown the nest. But we need space for our various art pursuits in the house and are not too keen on gardening. Perhaps it's a tall order?/ Thanks in advance for your help and I/we look forward to reading your mail soon,
Love to Hastings,
Jenni

E-mail: beccahi@earthlink.netAm currently researching my family tree and in information given to me handed down through generations, I've been told that Richard Elphick I was born in Battle,Sussex Co., and owned a large estate in Hastings (probably in the late 1700"s or so).He had three sons, Richard II, James and Charles, and two daughters Elizabeth(who married a Mr. Cutherth sp?) and Nancy (who married Mr. Noakes). Any information you have would be greatly appreciated! Will be happy to exchange all the information I have found. Thanks

E-mail: 104707.2637@compuserve.comHi anyone looking at this. I live in the Hastings area, have done most of my life. Grew up in Ore, but moved away for a few years. Now I'm back and established myself as a Poet.
If you come to visit our Town, I can assure you, in the summer it is beautiful. Looking out from the West Hill above the sea can be very exhilarating and breathtaking. The sea can be like a mill pond, and glisten in the sun.
I quite often sit in the middle of the green with my pen and paper and just create my words with the mood of the setting I experience.

Three years ago my family and I had a great two week holiday in
the Hastings area.
We stayed with some friends, Derek & Sylvia Durham , whom lived
in Cow Beech.
Unfortunately the Durham's must have moved and we have been unable
to contact them. We have writen them a number of times, but get our
mail returned. We would really like to contact them.
Would anyone be so kind to check your telephone directory , and see
if they could supply me with their new address and telephone number
Please E-mail if anyone can help.
Thank you in advance.

E-mail: stjean@connect.ab.caHi there,
Just thought I'd let all you out there know how much I loved my very brief trip overseas. I appsolutely will come again within two years time, I really want to see and explore the East Sussex Coast as this is where my great, great Aunty June lives in Icklesham. From what I saw driving from Stonehenge (by the way, does everyone know of the horrid plan to make it into an amusement park? please check out (http://www.mistral.co.uk/hammerwood/stonheng.htm) and through the small towns, it's appsolutely beautiful and it has prompted me to even consider transferring to an office there. Hope to see it again soon! If anyone is interested in chatting please drop me a line. Happy New Year everyone!
