Where can I reach Catherine Cookson?

Date: 31 December, 1998
From: Christina, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
E-mail: christinam@nucleus.com

Hello Everyone!

Although I've never had the honour of visiting England, I feel as if I know it through the writing of my favorite author, Catherine Cookson. I was only 13 years old when my then 86 year old great grandmother introduced me to her books. It stunned me to think that I could enjoy the same book as my Nanny Bigney! But not only did I enjoy it, I lived it. She brings her characters and settings to life. When I cuddle up with a good Cookson novel and a big cup of hot tea, I'm as happy as I can be. Eleven years later, I'm still a huge fan, and so is my Nanny.

Now I too am a writer, and I have a project I would be most pleased to write Ms. Cookson about. I'm hoping one of you kind soulds will help direct me to her. Either a postal address or an e-mail address would be wonderful. I'd also like to let dear Catherine know how much her writing has meant to me, and how greatly it's inspired me in my own work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance. I hope someday to come and visit beautiful Hastings and meet all of the wonderful people there. From the messages posted here, I think I'll be visiting a pub or two!

Take care everyone,
Christina

My name is Daniel Frank Hornek. I am originally from Israel and I live in Miami, FL for the last 10 years. My father's name is George Hornek and he is 76 years old (he lives in Israel) and originally he is from Prague, Czechoslovakia. During the German invasion to Czechoslovakia in W.W.II, to my father's knowledge, his family and relatives had been sent to concentration camps and killed by the Germans. (we are jewish) After the war my father moved to live in Israel. My father's family name used to be Cohen, his father (my father's father) change the family name to Hornek before my father was born. He changed the family name due to increasing anti-Semitism towered Jews at that time.

- my father's father's name Erwin Hornek
- my father's mother's name Adella Hornek
- my father's brother's name Frank Hornek (he was about 14 year old)

Please let me know if you have any information related to these people or other information that can help me to find out what happened to my family.

Thank you! And your help is appreciated.

CHRISTMAS WEATHER IN HASTINGS

Date: 27 November, 1998
From: Kathleen Vance, San Francisco, USA
E-mail: kayvee@prodigy.net

Hello, and many thanks to all responsible for such a delightfully informative website!

I'm making my first journey to Hastings over Christmas/New Year's week ('98/'99) to celebrate a dear freind's housewarming there. She's told me to expect things to be a bit on the chilly side -- but I wonder just how chilly things are apt to get there at this time of year? (My previous Christmas sojourns to greater London-area might or might not prepare me for Hastings.) Would appreciate practical advice (in degrees Farenheit, if possible!) -either here on the Board, or via email directly.

Thanks -- and happy holidays to all my fellow Hastings Enthusiasts!

Kathleen

Information required on RYE HOUSE CASTLE

Date: 24 November, 1998
From: Geoffrey Robbins, Preston, Lancashire, U.K.
E-mail: Geoffrey_Robbins@compuserve.com

I would like to find some information about Rye House Castle which may, or may not, be in the area of the town of Rye, Sussex.
Why I want this info is that my wife and I have a Victorian Plate, (obviously a souvenir type plate), and in the centre of the plate is a picture of the said Rye House Castle - a place we have failed to locate in any of our reference books.

Any information that anyone can supply me with will be very much appreciated.

Please E-mail me or leave a message here on the board. Thanks.

SNOWDROP SERVICE

Date: 23 November, 1998
From: Mary Jo West, Hastings/St Leonards, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.com

In the town occasionally is a service in respect of lost babies. I went to one such service, not sure if it was called the same at the Buchanan Hospital two or three years ago. I wanted to lay my baby or babies to rest. I suffered a miscarriage. I lost them back in 1973 and never really got over this. I was lucky to have given birth to another child, I called him my miracle baby - and it was him, my son, who helped me, along with this service to come to terms with their death.

I have become open with this, in the hopes other mothers, or fathers, will go to this service when it takes place, and also find some sort of peace as I did, and be able to lay their baby or babies to rest.

It really does help, I can vouch for that.

Hi
Speaking as a Hastings resident for nine years, I must say how pleasant it was to read the messages on this board, coming from so many people all over the world. It is very warming to know that you have such fond memories of Hastings.
As you will remember, Hastings has an extraordinarily active music scene and for two years Hastings has had it's own Samba group called Sambalanco. The twenty piece Carnival percussion band play the swinging rhythms of Brazil in a variety of outdoor Carnival occasions.
My web page, which also features free drum lessons, has a number of photographs of this years Hastings Old Town Carnival. You can visit this site at:-

Very best wishes

Oh, to be in Hastings, now that autumn is there

Date: 17 November, 1998
From: Donna, East Lansing, USA
E-mail: 106117.1543@compuserve.com

It's wonderful to read all the cheerful messages about Hastings and 1066 Country. I am very surprised when I talk with some local people who don't appreciate it as much as some of us who don't get to live there all the time.

I still find new things to see and do there. I particularly like the antique and junque shops on the back streets of St. Leonards and Hastings. Visitors often never find Bohemia, which I enjoy too. Great bookstore up there.

Who can resist waking up and seeing that wonderful sea everyday?

I'm an 'Old Towner' looking to return...

Date: 16 November, 1998
From: Dina Pepper, Sedona, Arizona, U.S.A.
E-mail: Peppergo@aol.com

Hi there,

I'm a 51 year old "local" - living here in the desert 25 years! ... Am missing the sea, fish 'n chips and English people.

I attended St. Mary Star of the Sea, Sacred Heart, and later the Anchor and the Nelson. I'm proud I come from one of the old fishing families and will be home next year to keep an eye on Daddy, who lives on the west hill.

I'd love to work either in an office or at home, doing secretarial/editing/proof-reading work. I type 80 w.p.m. and take rusty Pitman shorthand ... (also attended Mary Wray Secy. college in Wellington Square)...I guess the local employment situation is a real joke, and I don't expect much from this little input, so if you'd like to connect for whatever other reason, please do so....would welcome hearing from you.

Greetings from the New Age Center of the world.

Bye, love and peace,

Dina Pepper

It's 2 a.m. where I live and I can't sleep, so I am visiting the 1066 country bulletin board. The emails from people that have visited this part of England have so many great things to say I will certainly visit there in the spring (hopefully around the first of May). Is there a place where an experienced rider could rent the use of a horse to ride sometimes over a couple of weeks (and be "free" to roam the countryside?) Are there riding trails connecting towns? Is it possible to ride around some of the castles, or are they protected? Just curious and planning an itinerary....Thanks

E-mail: nuttmans@elkgrove.net

Greetings topeople living in Hastings/St. Leonards. It is a small world indeed! I was talking to an American lady at our church recently. She mentioned she and her husband lived in Hastings for sometime. I explained my parents took me on holidays to Hastings years 1946/47/48. In the summer of 1948 upon arriving from London I was taken ill in Woolworths. Next to the cricket ground. I was taken to the Buchanon hospital where I willing gave up my appendix! What makes this a small world is her reply to me was I had my first baby delivered in the Buchanon hospital. My wife and I live in a pkace called Elk Grove, south of the California State capital of Sacramento. Question. My parents took me to a boarding house in Tackleway in the old part of town, Is there anyone who could tell me if Tackleway is still there. At the end of the streeet, I seem to recall is a beautiful old Anglican church. I would love to hear from anyone. I will respond if I here.

I was amongst the first intake of the new Grove School in Hollington in I guess 1957 after the the then Uplands Technical School was forced to close.. Teachers at the school included Mr Duly, Ted Sellman, Jim Adams, Mr Armitstead, Jim Barlow, and Mr Hatfield was head teacher. Would be pleased to hear from anyone in those first years at the Grove. I never realized what a great place it was when I was there. Would especialy like to hear from Jim Barlow the history teacher. I believe he was living in Bexhill, anyone know his whereabouts. He ran the photography club at the school and he directly influenced me into taking up the profession. Anyone who remembers the "T" Classes at the Grove I would be glad to hear from you. local info for children's book

Date: 18 May, 1998
From: Debbie Majoros, Centralia, Washington, USA
E-mail: Majoros@localaccess.com

To anyone with some answers:
I am writing a fictional children's story involving a secret island and pirate's treasure about the year 1962. I've only seen pictures of your country and never traveled. What I'd like to know is this: In 1962,
(1)Would Hastings have been a good place for a family to rent a sailboat for vacation?
(2)What would have been the title of the top police authority in charge in your town or nearby?
(3)If pirate's treasure were found, am I correct in assuming there would have been an inquest and period of waiting of about a year to determine the reward?
(4)Would the police or museum have been in charge of such an inquest?
(5)Would there have been a museum nearby (or anywhere in England) that would display such items, if found?

My most sincere thanks to anyone who can answer any or all of the above. So far, I haven't been able to get any concrete information. Thanks again, Debbie Majoros

Paul McCartney

Date: 14 May, 1998
From: Ellen, Montgomery, USA
E-mail: emdunl@wvit.wvnet.edu

I,along with millions of other people, would like to let Sir Paul McCartney know we are still thinking of him in the loss of his wife Linda.

Me and my friends grew up listening to the Beatles. I'm from a very small town in West Virginia, and it seems 50 percent of our time me and my friends were playing music and singing along with Paul.

Although I've never met him personally, I feel like I know him. I have been very sad for him since the death of Linda. I've lost two cousins in the past three years with cancer, one was only 23 years old, the other 52.

It's a very hard thing to deal with. Our family is very close and I still grieve for my cousins.

Is there someway people can send their condolences to Sir Paul? If so, please let me know. I would love to let him know that he is still in our hearts and our prayers every day. Thank you.

Singin' in the Rain

Date: 12 May, 1998
From: Rob Dyer, Hastings, England
E-mail: rob@hastleons.demon.co.uk

This is a message for all local people : The Hastleons are performing the musical "Singin' in the Rain" at the White Rock Theatre from 23rd-30th May. It promises to be one of the best and adventurous musicals to hit the town for quite a while with superb video effects, film sequences and REAL rain on stage, as well as a great cast of 36. We are looking for a volunteer who is interested in technical theatre and would be able to operate the two video projectors used at various times during the show. It's not too complicated, and would be good fun as well! Please contact me for more information, or visit the Hastleons web site at www.hastleons.demon.co.uk

I would be most grateful if anyone could let me know how I can find out more about my grandfather Sir Alfred Dyer and also about the Hastings local Parliament that existed in the 1920s. I have a splendid desk, inherited from my mother, that was given to him "As an appreciation of his services as Speaker 1927 to 1930". Sadly I have little information about him and I know nothing at all about the parliament.

Genealogy: Sellens family

Date: 03 May, 1998
From: Elaine Robson, Dartmouth Nova Scotia, Canada
E-mail: robson.gunn@ns.sympatico.ca

I was born and spent most of my childhood in Hastings. I am trying to find some information on my grandfather ARTHUR JAMES SELLENS.
He owned the house at 12 Waldegrave Street, and died in July 1959.
He operated a moving business with his nephew Freddy Sellens. I believe that after his death the business was bought by Pickfords.
Arthur was married to Florence Barry: she died before I was born, probably in the late 1940s. I believe my grandfather had a brother Sidney who was a butcher.
If anyone has information please contact me.

Thanks,
Elaine Robson

sympathy to Paul McCartney and family.

Date: 24 April, 1998
From: VIVIAN, west babylon, long island, usa
E-mail: prismm56@yahoo.com

I was deeply saddened to hear of Linda McCartney's death this past week and was overwhelmingly moved by the statement I read that Paul made public. I have adored Paul since Beatmania days and he is a part of my life as he is for many others that grew up in that era with the Beatles and thereafter. If anyone has ever lost a loved one they know what kind of grief he is going through. I would like to somehow get a card to him and his family to extend my sypathies. I'm confused about the postal code system in England, however, I know his farm is in Peasmarsh. I just want to get it into the vacinity and maybe the post office will forward it. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.
May the Lord show you a sign to bring you comfort Paul.

On my way for May Day

Date: 10 April, 1998
From: Catherine Penfold-Waxman, New York, USA
E-mail: tlacel01@earthlink.com

Believe it or not, Hastings has a very special lure for many people. Just look through the messages left here.

Some say it's because it is a place of power, ley-lines cross there (East Sussex boasts the largest coven of witches). Or that once you've lived by the sea, you always go back. There is also the theory that you always remember fondly the place where you had the most fun, like on a holiday. As for me, I say it's the Brody's cider they serve in the "Pig in Paradise".

Strangely enough, I've ended up in an advertising agency in New York. I can do anything to anyone at anytime here in the big apple. But all I really want to do is have a cider with my (American) husband in the "Pig" on May Day. And that's exactly what I'm going to do. So, keep an eye out for the deliriously happy woman in a loud t-shirt with a guy who looks just like Silent Bob. We'll be sucking down a few cold ones.

Cheers!

HAPPY EASTER

RISE, MY CHILDREN

A new Spring morning brings delight,
The daffodils they blossom, yellow as gold in the sun,
They group together, leaves of green surrounding them,
They bring sunshine, into the hearts of many.

A new day, joy in someones heart,
A new way of living can come, like the joy of re-birth,
Easter is here, around the corner,
The start of a new days dawning.

Peace, a fresh beginning, a joy to see,
Daffodils dawning, bunching together, single as they come,
People everywhere, enjoying chocolate, eggs with meaning,
New life, a new beginning, children excited, parents bewildered.

Bring forth the meaning, of Christ our Dear Lord,
He came to save us from ourselves, our mistakes,
So let us all rise, with the new days dawning,
Bring new life, and enjoy our new beginning.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE

During my mis-spent youth in the mid 60s my Rocker mates and I used Hastings as our base during the holidays (mainly because the Mods kept away and we were mates with the local Rockers). We got caught out Easter '65 though! Our exploits are in my novel "Just for Kicks"

Hastings, or really Senlac, is the opening scene for my historical novel, "Woden's Wolf", which is about the English resistance to the Norman Conquest.

Although I am from Earlsfield in South London, my family was originally from Woolbedding in Sussex

Hello Hasting's People,
I was born in Hastings in 1945 and lived there until 1976 when I moved to Canada. I still yearn for Hastings and Fairlight. My Mum and Uncle still live in Hastings. My schooling was at St. Mary Star of the Sea, Hastings and then in St Mary Magdalenes and St Richards in Bexhill on Sea. My first job was as a telegram boy for the G.P.O. at Hastings. I then worked for the Hastings and Thanet Building Society and then I became a Man from the Pru.
I was married to my lovely wife, Sue, in 1966 at St Mary Star of the Sea. When we moved to Canada we had two daughters and we had two more in Canada. (Petticoat Government in this family) Whilst in Hastings I lived in Saxon Rd, on the Ridge, in Old London Road and a few months at Fairlight.(God's country)
I would love to hear from ex-Hastings and existing hastings residents. ( I was home last March...It was joy to be home)
STILL YEARNING

Hello from Canada! I lived in Hastings in 1958 on the Ridge. My family and I lived in a lovely old manor house.

I was told the house was originally "Lord and Lady Rance Manor" and I would like to know more about it.

Although I doubt these people were relatives, I would be interested in knowing more about them.

Please let me know if you have any information.

Thanks.

Hi all Hastings people. Wonder if someone can help me please. My great grandfather, Stephen Charles Coughtrey once lived at 182-184 Old London Road, Ore, Hastings. His will of 1908 described there being a house, shop and stable from which he ran the business of a coal merchant. I would be very interested to hear from someone who might be able to tell me what if anything is located on this site these days. The business might also have been known as Herbert's colliery. Thanks

1998 - Happy New Year

Date: 01 January, 1998
From: Mary Jo West, St Leonards on Sea, United Kingdom
E-mail: 104707.2637@Compuserve.com

Why at the beginning of this year, 1998, do I question the fear and the anguish in peoples lives?

Perhaps it is because of the trauma I went though last year, the heartache, the sadness and even the happiness. I am starting this year with a new awareness of peoples needs.

I am an ordinary person, a woman of this world and yet I have this desire to write. You ask, writing - what is that, well, it is a tool for the use of writing the individuals awareness of the world, the moment, the feeling, the beauty and even the ugliness of this our world. And, now, here we are in 1998.

A new year beginning, two years before the great millennium of 2000, in our era of time. What will the millennium bring, who knows. All of us can prepare, parties for fun, political reasoning being sorted and worked out, relationships, the upbringing of children, the comings and goings of people in our lives are part and parcel of the make-up of our world.

When I look from my window and see the expanse of beauty, the great mass of sky that leads to the cosmos, the half moon with a star shining below - I wonder what is out there sometimes. Remember when the astronauts of America went flying through this space in a rocket, even the Russians, well, they landed on the moon didnÍt they? DonÍt you think our countries of Earth, have such an intelligence that we are a very complex people,. Can you imagine, just us, the ordinary people of the world getting in one of these rockets, well, I donÍt think it could happen.

I have an imagination, I can be a child of the day, I can be a romantic as some find out in my life, but, the depth of my sincerity of this world is to be myself. I take on board the truths of the world, I take on board people that are genuine and true. Most of the people I seem to click with as the saying goes, are the most beautiful people of the earth. I find that we all have problems, we all have fears, we all have the need of friends, and we all need to be loved.

Love is what makes the world go round, I certainly know that. Love can be so beautiful in so many different forms.

Well, 1997 has disappeared now into the space of time behind us into history, and 1998 has begun.

I would like to wish everyone in the world a Happy New Year, a Prosperous New Year, and a year of fun, laughter, joy, even sadness, because without sadness, you wouldnÍt know any of the above would you.

And with this, the future can walk with us towards the millennium of our time, but just remember, as the future arrives, the present is always with us, and disappears into history in the making. So, if you want to make an impact in our world for history, get up and do something about it. DonÍt sit idle doing nothing - look at me, IÍm just having fun making words from the perception I see.

So, just think about what I have said, have a cup of tea, make waves in 1998, so we can prove to all further generations of Earth, that we are a very superior form of being - can you imagine what the researchers in the Millennium and all future Millenniums then will find? Happiness scattered everywhere, even in time capsules flying through the cosmos. Smile.
