Northbeye Village
Date: 06 September, 1999
From: Graham Denton, Croydon, England
E-mail: graham@denton01.globalnet.co.ukNorthbeye Village is marked on the Ordanance Survey maps as an antiquity (non-roman).
It lies about 1.5 miles inland near Norman's Bay and can be reached by around a mile of footpaths behind 'The Star Inn'. Having walked there (I assume that I found the right place) it is marked by mown areas near the edge of the fields and next to one of the many streams in the area.
Can anyone please tell me the history of Northbeye Village - what it is (or was)? I guess that it may be the site of an old (Norman?) village - but that's only a guess.

HCAT Film Studies 1986
Date: 11 July, 1999
From: Steev Hopper, London, UK
E-mail: shopper@findlay.co.ukWay back in the mists of the Eighties, a bunch of people met once or twice a week to study films. I know Steev Hopper was one of them; cos that's me. I know Steve Hamilton was another; and I know where he is -- but the rest of you... Samm Lay, Judith Bourne, Gary Yeo... etc etc (shuffles with embarrassment at having forgotten people's names over the years) where are you? And Pete McGawley... if you see this, *drop me a line* goddammit!
Hastings College, from September 1986 onwards... we studied Hitchcock (NBNW, Psycho, Marnie, Notorious, SOAT) Jane Fonda (TSHDT?) and horror (Nosferatu etc). It was fun; and then we all buggered off to our little lives.

From: alex and leila newman, hastings, sussex
E-mail: Alex_leila@hotmail.comJust to let any friends know that we are having a fantastic time. We have already cycled from Bangkok to Singapore, and are now on our way back up along the east coast of Maylasia. We are staying at this moment in a local village house on the edge of the forest in a village called Beserah, near Kuantan. The weather is stormy and hot, and sometimes we have to cycle 100km in a day through rain, as some of the minor roads have no shelter other than the forest. Along the coast the other day we spotted a family of Dugongs just out to sea. Anyway all the best to all our friends in Hastings.

A Foundation for Life
Date: 08 February, 1999
From: Roger Sinden, Hockley, Essex, United Kingdom
E-mail: rogersin@globalnet.co.ukReading the messages from Hastings exiles, scattered across the world, makes me reflect on the rich foundation for life that Hastings gave me.
As an ex Grammar School boy in 1963 to 1970 I had the privilege of being taught by the late Tom Cookson, who was influential in the positive development of so many young people. I did have the opportunity of writing to him many years on, to convey that personal gratitude.
Each Saturday whilst living in the town involved the pilgrimage to the Pilot Field to see the then Hastings United, who have subsequently been replaced by Hastings Town.I am still caught up with the journey from Essex, round trip of 178 miles, each time that Hastings Town are at home. The Hastings and St. Leonards Observer is a metaphoric umbilical cord.
Although there has been so much adverse publicity recently there is still much to value.

William the 'Conqueror'
Date: 05 February, 1999
From: Rose, Mill., U.S.
E-mail: Laughter@dmv.comI don't feel that William enjoyed anything about conquering or ruling England. He only led the conquest because that's what he said he would do; if he turned back on his word, all of Normandy would have thought that he was a poor ruler - which he was, to a certain extent. Harold was a much better ruler than William.

Map
Date: 17 January, 1999
From: Otet Alexandru, Brasov, Romania
E-mail: alflan@hip.roI want to find "Leafield, Witney, Oxon"
Editor's Note: Leafield is a village near the town of Witney, in the county of Oxfordshire, England, not far from the city of Oxford. "Oxon" is a short way to write "Oxfordshire": I believe it comes from the Latin name for Oxford. Here's a link to an interactive web map of the area on the Mapquest web site: Leafield
I hope this is helpful. It's a long way from Romania to Oxfordshire: if you're coming to England, why not visit Hastings too! -- Editor 29 Jan 1999.
